Encounter in J&K’s Handwara: Five security personnel martyred, two terrorists killed
Five security personnel were martyred and two terrorists were killed as the Handwara encounter entered its third day in Babgund area of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). Among those dead include three jawans or troops of the Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF), two J&K Police personnel and one civilian. The operation is still underway.One CRPF jawan succumbed to his injuries on Sunday in a local hospital, where he was admitted a day before. Two terrorists were also killed in the gunbattle. The last rites of the CRPF jawan Shyam Singh Yadav who succumbed to injuries yesterday were conducted with full state honours in Srinagar on Sunday. Two houses were destroyed in the cross-fire and some civilians got injured. The administration has brought in special commandos to end the operation that has continued for more than 53 hours now.
Acting on a tip-off, the security forces surrounded a house where terrorists were believed to be holed up. The terrorists opened fire as the security forces tried to advance. Even as the encounter entered its third day, there is no clarity if militants have been killed. As per reports, there was a brief lull in the firing which resumed after security forces tried to advance.
The encounter began on Friday morning when security forces launched a search and cordon operation in the North Kashmir region. Near the site of the encounter, clashes erupted between civilians and security forces in which several civilians were injured in the retaliatory action.
A youth identified as Waseem Ahmer Mir was admitted to a hospital where he was declared ‘brought dead’.
